QB Colt McCoy, Texas
Particulars: 6-2/210, Sr. High school: Tuscola (Texas) Jim Ned
Buzz: McCoy has set a national major-college record for career victories by a starting quarterback with 45. He has completed 70.5 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,512 yards and 27 touchdowns this season.
RB Toby Gerhart, Stanford
Particulars: 6-1/235, Sr. High school: Norco (Calif.) High
Buzz: The Heisman runner-up, Gerhart set school records and leads the nation with 1,736 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns.
RB Mark Ingram, Alabama
Particulars: 5-10/215, Soph. High school: Flint (Mich.) Southwestern Academy
Buzz: The Heisman winner, Ingram was the focal point of the Tide's offense. He's a tough between-the-tackles runner but also has good top-end speed.
WR Jordan Shipley, Texas
Particulars: 6-0/190, Sr. High school: Burnet (Texas) High
Buzz: He is one of six receivers in the nation with more than 100 receptions. Shipley averaged 12.9 yards per grab on 106 catches.
WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame
Particulars: 5-11/195, Jr. High school: Hendersonville (Tenn.) Pope John Paul II THE
Buzz: Tate caught 93 passes for 1,496 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he also rushed for two more scores. He ranks third in the nation with 124.7 receiving yards per game. Tate compiled an NCAA-high nine 100-yard receiving games and set school single-season records for catches and receiving yards.
TE Aaron Hernandez, Florida
Particulars: 6-2/250, Jr. High school: Bristol (Conn.) High
Buzz: Florida had an inexperienced receiving corps, and Hernandez finished the regular season as the Gators' leading receiver with his 59 receptions. He also can be a devastating blocker.
T Chris Marinelli, Stanford
Particulars: 6-7/300, Sr. High school: Braintree (Mass.) Boston College High
Buzz: One of the nation's premier linemen, he starred on an offensive unit that led the Pac-10 in rushing and was second in the country in fewest sacks allowed.
T Russell Okung, Oklahoma State
Particulars: 6-5/300, Sr. High school: Houston Bush
Buzz: An Outland Trophy finalist, Okung was named the Big 12's top lineman by conference coaches. He has posted 127 knockdown blocks and allowed just one sack.
G Mike Iupati, Idaho
Particulars: 6-6/330, Sr. High school: Anaheim (Calif.) Western
Buzz: Iupati, a native of American Samoa whose family moved to the Los Angeles area when he was 14, was an Outland Trophy finalist. He was a three-year starter for the Vandals and combines great size with excellent athleticism. He's a masher at the point of attack and has the quickness to pull and lead on sweeps.
G Mike Johnson, Alabama
Particulars: 6-5/303, Sr. High school: Pensacola (Fla.) Pine Forest
Buzz: Johnson may have been the SEC's best lineman this season. He was one of just two returning starters on the line for the Tide, who ran better this season than they did last season.
C Maurkice Pouncey, Florida
Particulars: 6-5/310, Jr. High school: Lakeland (Fla.) High
Buzz: His play helped Florida lead the SEC in rushing. The Gators love the read option, and one reason is that Pouncey almost always clears his man out of the way in the middle.
FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICA DEFENSEE Brandon Graham, Michigan
Particulars: 6-2/263, Sr. High school: Detroit Crockett Technical
Buzz: Graham wrapped up a standout career by leading the nation in tackles for loss with 26. He also had 10.5 sacks and two blocked kicks this season. He finished his career with 29.5 sacks.
T Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma
Particulars: 6-4/297, Jr. High school: Oklahoma City (Okla.) Southeast
Buzz: Despite frequent double-teams, McCoy has 31 tackles, with 14.5 for loss. He also has five sacks. He's solid against the run and has top-notch pass-rushing ability for an interior lineman.
T Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska
Particulars: 6-4/300, Sr. High school: Portland (Ore.) Grant
Buzz: A winner of numerous major defensive awards, Suh was fourth in the Heisman voting. He has posted an amazing 82 tackles, with 12 sacks, 23 tackles for losses and 11 passes defended. He blocked three kicks, too.
E Jerry Hughes, TCU
Particulars: 6-3/257, Sr. High school: Sugar Land (Texas) Austin
Buzz: Hughes was an all-state selection at running back as a high school senior, but he became an end as soon as he stepped on campus. While he lacks size, Hughes has a great first step off the edge and is relentless.
LB Pat Angerer, Iowa
Particulars: 6-1/235, Sr. High school: Bettendorf (Iowa) High
Buzz: A Big Ten tackling machine, Angerer was fifth in the nation with 135 stops. His shining moment came in a victory at Penn State when he recorded 14 tackles to go with an interception and a forced fumble.
LB Greg Jones, Michigan State
Particulars: 6-1/228, Jr. High school: Cincinnati Moeller
Buzz: In an otherwise forgettable season for the Spartans, Jones exceeded all expectations. He was everywhere for Michigan State's defense, leading the Big Ten in tackles with 141. He also led the Spartans in tackles for loss (13?) and sacks (nine).
LB Rolando McClain, Alabama
Particulars: 6-4/258, Jr. High school: Decatur (Ala.) High
Buzz: He's the physical and emotional leader of a Tide defense that will be expected to control the game in the national championship showdown with Texas. McClain is a solid run-stopper, and also has the speed and skills to be effective in coverage.
CB Joe Haden, Florida
Particulars: 5-11/190, Jr. High school: Fort Washington (Md.) Friendly
Buzz: He may have been the nation's best corner this season. He is adept at bump-and-run coverage, understands the nuances of playing zone and is a big-time hitter in run support. When the Gators played man-to-man, Haden almost always found himself locked up against the other team's best receiver.
CB Alterraun Verner, UCLA
Particulars: 5-11/180, Sr. High school: Carson (Calif.) Mayfair
Buzz: Verner is tied for second among Pac-10 defensive backs with five interceptions. He's also third on the Bruins with 65 tackles.
FS Earl Thomas, Texas
Particulars: 5-10/197, Soph. High school: West Orange (Texas) Stark
Buzz: A Thorpe Award finalist, Thomas leads the Big 12 with eight interceptions. He also is second among Texas players with 71 tackles.
SS Eric Berry, Tennessee
Particulars: 5-11/203, Jr. High school: Fairburn (Ga.) Creekside
Buzz: Berry was one of the most highly hyped defenders going into the season, and though he doesn't have great interception numbers this season, he still played superb football. He's a solid in-the-box run defender, and numerous pro scouts say his coverage skills are so good that his best position in the NFL will be cornerback.
FIRST-TEAM ALL-AMERICA SPECIALISTSK Kai Forbath, UCLA
Particulars: 6-0/192, Jr. High school: Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame
Buzz: The Groza Award winner, Forbath has converted 26-of-29 field-goal attempts and made all 23 kicks he has attempted inside 50 yards.
P Drew Butler, Georgia
Particulars: 6-2/203, Soph. High school: Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge
Buzz: Butler, whose dad, Kevin, was a longtime NFL kicker, led the nation in punting with a 48.8-yard average. His long was 75 and he had just three touchbacks. He also had great hang time, which enabled the Bulldogs to also lead the nation in net punting at 42.8 yards per boot.
KR C.J. Spiller, Clemson
Particulars: 5-11/195, Sr. High school: Lake Butler (Fla.) Union County THE
Buzz: Spiller has scored on four kickoff returns and one punt return this season. He has set an NCAA record by scoring on seven career kickoff returns. Spiller ranks fourth in the nation with a kickoff return average of 33.7 yards per attempt, which puts him within striking distance of former North Carolina State player George Marinkov's 55-year-old ACC record average of 35.3.
PR Javier Arenas, Alabama
Particulars: 5-9/195, Sr. High school: Tampa Robinson
Buzz: Arenas was second in the SEC in punt returns and first in kick returns, as well as playing well at cornerback. He was No. 2 in the SEC in number of punt returns with 29 and returned one for a touchdown. |
