Adams reportedly was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, S.C., where he was pronounced dead at 8:21 a.m. Chicago time. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Sunday.
“We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines’ passing,” the Bears said in a statement. “Our prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Adams appeared in 10 games as a reserve for the Bears after being acquired Oct. 16 in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a 2010 second-round draft pick.
Adams was selected by the Buccaneers with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 out of Clemson.
