Round 1 (Pick 12 - via trade with Cleveland Browns): Deshaun Watson, (QB, Clemson).
Round 2 (Pick 57): Zach Cunningham (ILB, Vanderbilt).
Round 3 (Pick 89): D’Onta Foreman (RB, Texas).
Round 4 (Pick 130): Julie’n Davenport (T, Bucknell).
Round 4 (Pick 142 - via Brock Osweiler Trade): Carlos Watkins (DT, Clemson).
Round 5 (Pick 169): Treston Decoud (CB, Oregon State).
Round 7 (Pick 243): Kyle Fuller (C, Baylor).

http://www.footballoutsiders.com ... ures-deshaun-watson

http://www.battleredblog.com/201 ... -the-texans-defense

Negatives 1st:
Watson's biggest weakness is locking onto his #1 read. Usually he'll get happy feet & scramble out of pocket before 2nd read
Deshaun can be fooled with safeties over the top.
He's shown questionable decision making in the red zone.
It seems that you can expect batted balls in every game. Defenses key on him looking down 1st read, mostly on quick outs.
Watson will also miss easy throws in the face of an oncoming blitz.

Positives:
Almost impossible to stop him when he's throwing in rhythm.
Throws passes with anticipation.
Great touch on his passes but has complete control to thread it or drop it in.
The post route seems to be Watson's best pass play. Can throw WRs open in the windows blindfolded or wait until WRs clear LBs.
Has a professional level understanding of backshoulder vs go. Some of his "off" throws are due to the WR reading the CB incorrect & DW right
He's a dynamic runner but that can become a crutch. Clemson leaned on him heavily in '16 as a runner in big games.
Showed ability to display pocket awareness & move in a muddy pocket while keeping eyes downfield but was few & far between. Ability there
Watson can beat a defense at all 3 levels (short / intermediate / deep).
Has shown ability to "turn off" run mode unless needed.
He's deadly when throwing outside the pocket, but this too could be a crutch & slow his development on progression throws.

I gave Deshaun Watson a late 1st round grade will the thought that he'll be drafted 10-20 range. Could go higher due to position.

WQdWzyyaQEc.twitter

1st Round - Pick #12 Deshaun Watson - Clemson - QB 6'2 - 221 40 time:  4.66 Hand Size:  9' 3/4"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 25th

He’s hard to stop when throwing in rhythm. Has throws with anticipation. Great touch on his passes can thread it or drop it in. The post route appears to be his best throw. Has a clear understanding of backshoulder vs. “go” throws.

A dynamic runner that defenses have to always concern themselves with. Shown ability to display pocket awareness and move in a muddy pocket while keeping eyes down field but rare to see as he usually bails. Can beat a defense at all three levels. Enough arm for hash throws. Deadly when passing outside of the pocket.Locks on to first read and usually gets happy feet and scrambles out of the pocket for second read.

When knocked out of rhythm on passes usually not a favorable outcome. He’ll sail, dirt or throw ill-advisedly into coverage. Can be fooled with safeties over the top. Occasional bad pass on routine throws. Questionable decision making in the red zone. Will have batted passes from staring down reads. I’d worry about routine injuries similar to Marcus Mariota’s career.

Misses throws in the face of blitzes.Scored 75 total points in two national championship games against Alabama.  In those two games he completed 66 passes on 103 attempts for a 64.1% completion percentage and threw for 825 yards, 7 passing touchdowns and 1 interception.  He also ran for 116 yards and another touchdown.

List of NFL Defensive players that Watson played against in those four college football playoff games and where they were drafted in the 2016 and 2017 NFL Drafts:

Charles Tapper - DE - Oklahoma - 4th round pick 101 - 2016

Zach Sanchez - CB - Oklahoma - 5th round pick 141 - 2016

Devante Bond - OLB - Oklahoma - 6th round pick 183 - 2016

Jordan Evans - LB - Oklahoma - 6th round pick 193 - 2017

Marshon Lattimore - CB - Ohio State - 1st round pick 11 - 2017

Malik Hooker - FS - Ohio State - 1st round pick 15 - 2017

Gareon Conley - CB - Ohio State - 1st round pick 24 - 2017

Raekwon McMillan - ILB - Ohio State - 2nd round pick 54 - 2017

Reggie Ragland - ILB - Alabama - 2nd round pick 41 - 2016

A'Shawn Robinson - DT - Alabama - 2nd round pick 46 - 2016

Jarran Reed - DT - Alabama - 2nd round pick 49 - 2016

Cyrus Jones - CB - Alabama - 2nd round pick 60 - 2016

Marlon Humphery - CB - Alabama - 1st round pick 16 - 2017

Jonathan Allen - DL - Alabama - 1st round pick 17 - 2017

Reuben Foster - ILB - Alabama - 1st round pick 31 - 2017

Ryan Anderson - LB - Alabama - 2nd round pick 49 - 2017

Dalvin Tomlinson - DT - Alabama - 2nd round pick 55 - 2017

Tim Williams - LB - Alabama - 3rd round pick 78 - 2017

Eddie Jackson - S - Alabama - 4th round pick 112 - 2017

2nd Round - Pick #57 Zach Cunningham - Vanderbilt - ILB 6'3 - 23440 time:  4.67 Arm Size:  34' 3/8"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 78th

Zach takes good angles to the ball and plays with really good speed.  He's great at "take-on" as he uses his long arms and leverage to hit blockers and immediately discard them.  He's pretty good in coverage and that's an area that has been sorely missing in the Texans inside linebacking group for quite some time.Cunningham bites too hard on fakes and is slow to react.  He tackles away from the body too often and this turns into missed tackles.  He also misses too often in space.  He doesn't play instinctual.  He recognizes too slowly. Cunningham had 125 tackles and 16.5 tackles for a loss in 2016.

3rd Round - Pick #89 D'Onta Foreman - Texas - RB 6'0 - 23340 time:  4.45 Hand Size:  10' 1/8"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 98th

Foreman has deceptive speed.  He played fast in college despite being listed at 249 pounds.  He has good vision and lateral ability.  He runs with patience and will allow blocks to develop and holes to open up.  Foreman plays off the back of his blockers well.  A very instinctual runner.  He's really dangerous when running behind pulling blockers.  In the 4th quarter he'll make his money as he wears defenses down and then just runs over them.He has to become a much better pass blocker.  I can't remember a back of his size ever being this bad in picking up blitzers.  I noted that he needed to drop 15-20 pounds as a rookie and that we could see added agility similar to what Le'Veon Bell after getting to the NFL from Michigan State.  Foreman didn't wait, he showed up to the NFL Combine 16 pounds lighter.  My hope is that he'll be as dynamic throughout the game as he was in the 4th quarters in college.Massive hands to snatch the ball in the passing game.  Rushed for over 2,000 yards his last season at Texas and also put up 15 rushing touchdowns.  Averaged 6.4 yards per carry in college.

4th Round - Pick #130 Julien Davenport - Bucknell - OT 6'7 - 31840 time:  5.45 Arm Size:  36' 1/2"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 227th

Davenport has really good size and very rare length.  He played well versus his level of competition.  Despite his size, he shows the athleticism to cut.  His arm length isn't routine, even for the top guys in most classes and they could allow him to cover up some flaws as he grows. He plays too high and allows defenders to get him off balance or get free.  Davenport doesn't respond well to counter moves.  He played soft in college and was mostly a "get-in-the-way" type of lineman.  When he faces speed rushers, they'll take him out of his element and his technique breaks down.  This is a high upside pick and one that could pay huge dividends in a few years if the Texans are able to mold him into a prospect that can reach his full potential.  I'd be shocked if he started any games as the right tackle in 2017.  Davenport is also on the 5th non-power five player that the Texans have drafted with Bill O'Brien as head coach.

4th Round - Pick #142 Carlos Watkins - Clemson - DT/DE 6'3 - 309 Arm Size:  34' 5/8"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 115th

Watkins is a power game type of player.  A body mover if you will.  His bull rush is devastating.  He's stout enough to anchor versus double teams.  He a great fit for the Texans scheme.Watkins disappeared at times during games in college.  The chief reason being his inconsistent pad level.Watkins has instant chemistry with former Clemson teammate and current Texans defensive lineman mate, DJ Reader.  Watkins is a fit at 3-4 nose tackle and defensive end as well as 4-3 1-technique.  He'll most likely be used in all of those position with the Texans between base and sub packages.

5th Round - Pick #169 Treston Decoud - Oregon State - CB/S 6'2 - 186 40 time:  4.62 Arm Size:  33"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 186th

Decoud has a quick and smooth back pedal and a rapid break on the ball.  He's very aware and smart in zone.  A good blitzer.  He's probably best in off man.  The Texans could utilize him as a corner or even move him to safety. His biggest weakness is his poor angles in pursuit.  His position flexibility is key in what Houston will view as value.

7th Round - Pick #243 Kyle Fuller - Baylor - C/G 6'5 - 307 40 time:  5.24 Arm Size:  34' 1/8"

Braddock's Overall Prospect Ranking: 303th

This is a size, weight, length pick.  Fuller's film is poorish at best, but the Texans may believe that he has the clay to mold into a solid interior offensive lineman. He gets rocked by defensive punches.  He shoots his arms late and allows the defensive lineman to get positioning.  He doesn't play to his size and at times seems lazy.  He allows defenders to shed him too easy.  He'll overextend and lacks a quality base or foundation.

To put a bow on the Texans 2017 NFL Draft class, I think the Texans were wise to allow the draft to come to them.  Many wanted Houston to force the issue with offensive line but this wasn't the year to do so.  If they had, they would have weakened their team over the next 4-5 years by leaving much more talented, key pieces on the board.

Houston may have landed their franchise quarterback of the future in this draft.  The depth chart of 1) Tom Savage and 2) Deshaun Watson is the most promising for this team than at any point in this franchise's history.  Houston had neglected the quarterback position, as well as an inside linebacker that could cover.  In their first two picks, they addressed both of those key needs.  Lamar Miller was never the type of back that should get the type of workload that he saw in 2016 and the Texans fixed that situation in the third round.

Foreman fills a massive need and takes pressure off the offensive line and the quarterback position, due to being able to force more people into the box and maximizing the potential for yards.

While Davenport may not be the answer in 2017, he gives them a developmental project for the future and a potential Duane Brown replacement.  I've said numerous times that I would wait until the 3rd day of the draft to address offensive line and Houston saw the same thing with this draft class.  Now, I may not agree with the prospect that the Texans added, but completely embrace the way they went about it.

I also wouldn't rule out Davenport reaching his potential.  As the offensive line is concerned, as I've said for the last few months, I wouldn't be shocked to see a current, behind-the-scenes prospect arise to become that starting right tackle in 2017.  It may sound crazy, but who expected AJ Bouye to be the best corner on the roster in 2016?How Houston utilizes Decoud is the key question.  Is he a safety or corner in this defense?  I have no problem trusting the Texans with deciding this.  He has the length of a press corner, the ability of a zone or off-man corner and plays like a free safety.  I'm sure they'll find his best role over the coming months, but regardless, it's another quality pick for Houston to add to their secondary.

Kyle Fuller is the interior version of Davenport on the outside.  It appears to me that the Texans are betting on their offensive line coach to mold clay with these two prospects.  Let’s expand on that, the entire class has the measurables that you desire:

Watson = almost 10 inch hands, great for a quarterback.  Cunningham = 34' 3/8" arms and 6'3, insane length for an inside linebacker.  Foreman = 10' 1/8" hands and played running back at 249 pounds.  Massive hands for a running back and a mid-size truck ready to run over people at max size.  Davenport 36' 1/2" arms and Fuller 34' 1/8" arms are each extremely rare length for their positions on the offensive line.  Watkins = 34' 5/8" arms are solid for the position and he has natural chemistry with last year's fifth round pick, DJ Reader from their days at Clemson.  Decoud = 33" arms and 6'2 height.  It's abundantly clear that Houston had a plan and executed it to perfection.

As a fan, take comfort in the strategy and execution that this organization implemented to start 2017.  I believe this franchise is in the best position that it has ever been in.  I get asked the question on-and-off from time to time: Who should the Texans keep between Rick Smith or Bill O'Brien?

After this draft, my answer has changed to this:  As a fan, you should hope that egos are put aside and that this organization can keep both, going forward as this is the brightest the future has ever looked for the Texans franchise.  It's not a popular belief, but the team of Rick Smith / Bill O'Brien could be dominant.  This draft shows that Smith and O'Brien have found a groove on what needs to be done for both to find success in a football sense.  Personally?  Who cares if they send each other Christmas cards?  They need to find a way to coexist...for the Texans best interest!

For every INT that was definitely his fault, he made plenty of excellent plays.

And there’s one other thing that’ll make him more efficient in the Playoff: the threat of his legs.
